5 Dental Issues That Emergency Dentists Handle Often

Dentist Blog

As a rule of thumb, you should see an emergency dentist if you experience any dental issue that can't wait until your regular dentist is available to diagnose and treat it.

So, what qualifies as a dental emergency? Here are some common dental issues that may warrant seeing an emergency dentist.

1. Severe tooth pain

If you are in excruciating pain due to tooth decay, dental abscess or trauma to your mouth, an emergency dentist can help to diagnose and treat the problem. Treatment for toothache generally depends on the cause of the pain and the extent of damage sustained.

Take over-the-counter pain-relief medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen to help alleviate pain and discomfort. If they do not work, you may ask your dentist for stronger pain relievers.

2. Severe bleeding

If you are bleeding profusely, you may control the bleeding by applying gentle pressure to the affected area with a clean, damp cloth or cotton gauze.

Thereafter, see an emergency dentist immediately to address the source of the bleeding.

3. Avulsed tooth

An avulsed tooth, commonly referred to as a knocked-out tooth, is one of the most dreadful dental emergencies you can face. It typically happens due to fights, sports injuries and other trauma to the mouth.

If you do not act quickly and decisively, you may lose the avulsed tooth permanently. Emergency dentists generally recommend immediate replantation of the avulsed tooth to help increase the chance of saving it.

4. Dental abscess

An abscess is a pocket of pus that forms in the tooth or gums due to infection. It can lead to inflamed gums, severe pain, high fever and difficulty eating.

Dental abscesses require immediate treatment to stop the infection from spreading and causing more serious problems, which can be expensive to treat.

Treatment for an abscess typically involves draining the pus and prescribing antibiotics to treat the underlying cause of the infection.

5. Loose tooth

If one or more of your teeth are loose, you should treat them immediately to avoid losing them.

Popular treatment options for loose teeth in adults include deep cleaning, splinting, flap surgery, bone grafts and more. The appropriate method for saving a loose tooth depends on the extent of the problem and how early it is discovered.

When confronted with these or other dental emergencies, seeing an emergency dentist ASAP will boost your chances of a positive patient outcome.
